IUD (intrauterine device)
A copper coil is inserted into the womb. This device does not contain hormones.
An IUD is over 99% effective.
It works as soon as it's put in and lasts for 5 or 10 years, depending on the type.
It can also be used for emergency contraception.

Contraceptive implant (the rod)
A small plastic rod is inserted under the skin of your arm. The rod we provide is Nexplanon and it contains the hormone progestogen.
The implant is over 99% effective.
It needs to be replaced every 5 years.

Contraceptive Injection (depo)
The injection contains the hormone progestogen.
The injection is over 99% effective.
It lasts for 8 to 13 weeks, depending on the type - we provide depo-provera or sayanna press.

If you require a coil fitting as part of your HRT please see your GP to be referred into the service.
